About Lake Jacomo Wildlife Area

Located just south of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Lake Jacomo Wildlife Area encompasses approximately 7,750 acres of habitat that includes Lake Jacomo, forested uplands, wetlands, and open fields. The area was originally developed in the 1950s as a game management and public fishing resource by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Lake Jacomo itself covers 970 acres and is a managed reservoir providing ample fishing, boating, and paddle sports. The surrounding uplands feature a mix of oak-hickory woodlands and prairie, supporting diverse wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, beavers, and numerous songbird species. Active wildlife management and habitat restoration efforts help maintain this diversity. Recreational opportunities include hiking, mountain biking on a dedicated trail system, camping, horseback riding, and winter activities such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing when conditions allow. The trails range from easy loops around the lake to more challenging forested routes, appealing to a wide range of users. The area includes several developed campgrounds that provide access to the lake and natural areas. Fishing enthusiasts can target largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill from shore or boat. Visitor appeal comes from the combination of proximity to the Kansas City metropolitan area with a rustic outdoor setting offering year-round activities and scenic views of the lake and woodlands. The management focus on wildlife habitat and public outdoor recreation makes Lake Jacomo Wildlife Area a valued natural destination in Missouri's landscape.
